Summary

Set in Derry, Northern Ireland in the 1990s, Derry Girls is a candid, one-of-a-kind comedy about what it's like to be a teenage girl living amongst conflict。

It's a time of armed police in armoured Land Rovers and British Army check points。 But it's also the time of Murder She Wrote, The Cranberries, Salt-N-Pepa, Doc Martens and The X Files。 And while The Troubles may hang over her hometown, Erin has troubles of her own, like the fact that the boy she's in love with (actually in LOVE with) doesn't know she exists。 Or that her Ma and Aunt Sarah make her include her weirdo cousin Orla in everything she does。 Or that head teacher Sister Michael refuses to acknowledge Erin as a literary genius。 Not to mention the fact that her second best friend has ALMOST had sex, whereas Erin's never even kissed anyone yet。 These are Erin's Troubles。

Described by the Guardian as 'daft, profane and absolutely brilliant', by the New Statesman as 'pitch-perfect' and by i-D as 'the greatest show on British (and Irish) TV', Derry Girls has dazzled audiences for two series, with Channel 4's biggest UK comedy launch since 2004 and the biggest television series in Northern Ireland since modern records began。

Now, this autumn, comes the first official tie-in。 In the manner of the very best TV comedy books, Erin's Diary is a hilarious 'in world' publication that extends the laugh-out-loud humour of Derry Girls onto the page。 With Erin's inner take on everything that has happened so far, this book will both dive deeper into the events we have seen unfold on the screen and unveil brand new stories and never-before-revealed details about characters。 Complete with newspaper clippings, doodles, poetry, school reports, handwritten notes from her friends, and much much more, Erin's Diary is as warm, funny and brilliantly observed as the TV; a must-have for fans this Christmas。

'Erin is sixteen and wishes she had a boyfriend and a life。 Nothing else really happens。。。 It's boring。' Orla McCool

It's a good quick read for somebody who wants a retelling of the show。 Some of the jokes are pretty funny and it does sound like Erin。 I hope there's another one for after the show It's a good quick read for somebody who wants a retelling of the show。 Some of the jokes are pretty funny and it does sound like Erin。 I hope there's another one for after the show 。。。more

Very fun! Made me want to rewatch the series。 Also, I can’t wait for season 3!!!!

This was loads of fun - it follows each episode directly, so there aren't any big surprises (view spoiler)[although I did a double take at Erin's response to James at Prom (hide spoiler)] but all the little additions like homework assignments and movie reviews were hilarious。 I listened to the audiobook, read by Saoirse-Monica Jackson herself, and highly recommend it! This was a fun read! The diary follows the first and second season of Derry Girls and is enriched with notes and lists among other writings by Erin, her friends and family members。 Erin’s self-absorbed character is depicted very accurately 😃 If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll love this book (and if you haven’t seen it yet, I STRONGELY recommend doing so)!

This was a hoot, and I’d have given it a 5 if I felt it could stand alone without readers having watched the series。 But I think you’ll enjoy it more if you do see the series first。 Very fun and a wonderful keepsake to one of the funniest series to come out of Ireland!

It’s almost creepy how often I’ve seen the show by now… I had literally been waiting for this book since first word got out。 I specifically got the audiobook (for like €25 that is insane—) narrated by the one and only Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Erin Quinn)。 I think I read it in a day sometime in 2020。 It was so fucking funny。 Ahhhh! I also had to buy the ebook because I could not for the life of me understand a word Saoirse said, lol。i found my initial review (on another site): What a cracker book! Though I'd wish there was more stuff behind the show… still loved it though。 。。。more

GOD, BUT THIS BOOK IS SUCH A CRACKER CRAIC!!!Derry Girls is one of my favourite Netflix series and of course I loved reading this book so much。 I'm so glad to have finally read it as I waited for more than a year to be able to do so。 You'll love everything here if you're a Derry Girls fan。 All the graphics here all SO cute and it's just nice to see the "actual" visuals of stuff that happens in the show (prom posters, handwritten letters, etc), so props to the graphic desginers! We all get to know the other side stories that aren't shown in the series itself (Michelle's mum bowl, the fact that the gang actually tried to hang out with Take That and Bill Clinton's daughter, James' poem for English class which I love so much LOL and the way it was said that he pretends to like Oasis, etc)。 It's just so interesting and the making of this book was such a brilliant idea。This book has Erin's point of views, hence the name Erin's diary (which she calls her "memoirs")。 She believes that she's gonna get a lot of money from selling this book。 Everything is just so funny that I actually caught myself laughing。 I love Erin's self-unawareness and how she lies in her own diaries in order to manipulate her readers into thinking that she's that much of a great person。 Lisa McGee is a freaking genius。 She's still able to depict Erin's exact personality into words here (I don't know if that even makes sense as she's literally the writer of the show but that's just how I feel bye)。 Maybe the show already has rotted my brain too much but I could hear Erin's voice whilst reading。 I know Lisa McGee made this book to keep all the fans company (as the series' production was like pushed back), but I'd love it if she would make a second book after series 3 is released! 😁 。。。more

So funny and I love the little tidbits that add more to the show。 Erin’s version of stories, with all of her teenage angst and overconfidence as an ~artist~, are a delight。 Lisa McGee is so talented with her humor and it makes me love Derry Girls even more。 Cant wait for season 3!!

Just as cracker as the fecking show。 If you’ve seen and enjoyed Derry Girls, pick this one up immediately!

I absolutely love Derry Girls, by far one of my favourite TV shows in the world, that’s why I bought this book。 It’s an easy read and an enjoyable one at that, but nothing more。 Erin on screen has redeemable qualities but on paper she comes off as arrogant and delusional to the point of silly。 The best thing about this diary was the glossary and that it sort of confirms that James will be Erin’s love interest。

Rachel

this was okay。 obviously not as good as the show but good in the meantime。

If you are a fan of the show, then you will definitely be a fan of this book。 It covers the same ground as the first two seasons of the show - with some extra details and some stellar jokes。 It is not a life-changing book, but it is an easy and entertaining read。 It is best to listen to the audiobook as the actress who plays Erin on the show also narrates the book。 Plus, on Audible, there is an accompanying PDF with pictures and media from the actual book。 I cannot wait for the third season of t If you are a fan of the show, then you will definitely be a fan of this book。 It covers the same ground as the first two seasons of the show - with some extra details and some stellar jokes。 It is not a life-changing book, but it is an easy and entertaining read。 It is best to listen to the audiobook as the actress who plays Erin on the show also narrates the book。 Plus, on Audible, there is an accompanying PDF with pictures and media from the actual book。 I cannot wait for the third season of the show! 。。。more

I almost feel like I shouldn't be reading this being a Scottish "prod" and all but this was crack。 At least it would be crack for people who loved the series and even then this is really just a rehash/retelling of the events of the two seasons。 And this is really just a pet peeve but it annoys me when media tie-ins that are supposed to be diaries use promo shots of the show as pictures that are supposed to be in the diary? I can maybe see the Derry Girls attempting a promo shoot but then something would go wrong and Orla would probably have set Erin's hair on fire and Clare and James would be screaming and the only one mugging for the camera would be Michelle。 Just seems a bit weird is all。There were some really nice additions to this but it really felt like a missed opportunity to add even more to the series vs going over things we know even if it is from Erin's perspective。 Though as an Erin/James shipper I was VERY happy! 。。。more

Why would Orla be the only one to read Erin's diary? Derry Girls' writer provides the full thing so we can laugh (out loud in some pages too) with the adventures of the gang in 90s Derry, Very funny if you've watched the TV series。 Otherwise, probably hard to follow。 All in all, a good companion while we long for a season 3。 Why would Orla be the only one to read Erin's diary? - I will read anything lisa mcgee writes ever- her sense of humour is impeccable- I could so clearly picture erin's expressions as I was reading this- also erin's characterisation as a self centered pretentious teenager is so on point- and the soft and genuine feelings towards james in the end had me all soft 🥺 - I will read anything lisa mcgee writes ever- her sense of humour is impeccable- I could so clearly picture erin's expressions as I was reading this- also erin's characterisation as a self centered pretentious teenager is so on point- and the soft and genuine feelings towards james in the end had me all soft 🥺 。。。more

This was a really fun book。 It honestly kind of read like fanfiction but whatever, it was still super fun to read。 It was interesting/nice to see what the characters were up to between the episodes! I also liked the little extras we got like Clare's article on being lesbian and Erin's letter to James (which was so adorable!)I'm really hyped for season 3!! Not sure if the book would make sense to anyone who hasn't seen the show, but I loved it。 Through Erin's Diary, we get to see Erin's personality more。 She's a young girl in a small town who takes herself way too seriously and is completely hilarious as a result。 The book is filled with "artifacts" of the events that transpire, including the Take That concert tickets and letters left by various characters in the story。 Derry Girls and Erin's Diary are both set in the 1990s and are clearly inspire Not sure if the book would make sense to anyone who hasn't seen the show, but I loved it。 Through Erin's Diary, we get to see Erin's personality more。 She's a young girl in a small town who takes herself way too seriously and is completely hilarious as a result。 The book is filled with "artifacts" of the events that transpire, including the Take That concert tickets and letters left by various characters in the story。 Derry Girls and Erin's Diary are both set in the 1990s and are clearly inspired by true life events。 The characters are totally realistic: from the Uncle who can't stop talking about the most inane details to space cadet Orla to her vain but oblivious mother who's actually still kind of nice。 I definitely want to spend more time with these characters。 。。。more

A hilarious must-read for anyone who is a fan of Derry Girls。 I will say I don't know that it would win over readers who haven't seen the show - Erin is at Peak Erin, and I think if I wasn't already fond of her I would find her pretty annoying。 But instead I enjoyed her commentary on the events of the show (especially her list of priorities - boys and friend drama take a starring role, as whatever happened with her parents and with politics barely makes an appearance), and the events in between A hilarious must-read for anyone who is a fan of Derry Girls。 I will say I don't know that it would win over readers who haven't seen the show - Erin is at Peak Erin, and I think if I wasn't already fond of her I would find her pretty annoying。 But instead I enjoyed her commentary on the events of the show (especially her list of priorities - boys and friend drama take a starring role, as whatever happened with her parents and with politics barely makes an appearance), and the events in between the episodes。 A lot of it is spent being punished for the events of the last episode, which makes sense lol。 。。。more

Derry Girls is one of my favourite shows, and this hilarious tie-in reminded me how much I adore it。 Erin’s voice really comes through, and her entries feel authentic to the original series。 Such a fun read, and a great gift for Derry Girls fans!
